Fall is in the air! From the crisp weather and changing leaves to comfort food and cozy sweaters, there’s much to look forward to once autumn arrives. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite Des Moines-area fall activities to take advantage of this season.

Des Moines Biergarten

The Des Moines Biergarten is open in Water Works Park every Wednesday through Sunday in October. Enjoy a German beer and German-inspired food while taking in brisk fall days in the outdoor garden. Bring your friends, family, pets, and children for live music, yard games, and tons of fall fun.

Center Grove Orchard

You can’t properly enjoy fall without an orchard! Center Grove Orchard is an area favorite that draws thousands of visitors annually. Spend a day partaking in everything Center Grove offers: a corn maze, apple picking, pumpkin patch, corn pit, apple cider donuts, hay rack rides, and more! This is one fall attraction you won’t want to miss.

Rail Explorers Rail Tours

If you love getting outside to see the changing leaves, you’ll definitely want to check out the Rail Explorers in Boone! Reserve your time to hop into a pedal-powered rail vehicle for a scenic tour on the railways. You’ll cruise over river valley sights and see some (hopefully) spectacular fall colors. Grab one to three friends and book your tour this fall.

Rose Farm

Enjoy the tranquility of Rose Farm in Norwalk, just a short drive from Des Moines. Rose Farm offers a range of activities, including workshops, seasonal events, and dinners. They have a three-acre flower farm with zinnias, dahlias, strawflowers, and so much more. Check out their Instagram for a list of this fall’s events.

College Football

Iowans love football, and there are plenty of options to attend a game in central Iowa. The Drake Bulldogs play in Des Moines, and the Iowa State Cyclones are just a short drive away at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. For the full fall experience, swing by before kickoff to take part in some gameday tailgating.
